With a new furry companion by my side (albeit a dead one) I feel confident to brave the dark mine my late bandit opponent had been guarding. The door creaks ominously as I enter.
I've only been inside a moment when my wolf-friend disintegrates like the one I raised earlier! What's going on, nobody is here to kill him. I refer back to the resurrection spell. It turns out they have an expiry date... I guess I should have read the fine print. That's going to make things a little harder, but I'm sure I can handle it.
It's dark in here, so I drop into a squat and disappear from sight. Who's sight? I don't know. Maybe those men I can hear talking in the darkness up ahead. I inch along, listening carefully. One of them is overly confident in his guard friend that I um... disposed of earlier. There's two of them, which works in my favour.
Fury! They come running at me, but I hit one of them and they begin attacking each other. Perfect! The spell's effect wears off before either one can finish off the other, but by only magicking one of them I've got the magicka to renew the effect. This time I'm ready when one of them falls. Straight away I resurrect him and he lives again (sort of), sustained by my fearsome power! It isn't long before the other bandit, so close to death, finally falls. The zombie follows me like a puppy, emitting a rather unsettling groan or two before disintegrating.
There's a raised bridge, but the lever to lower it isn't particularly well hidden, especially from one as highly intellectual as myself. Down it goes and I run across. It's still really dark in here... Oh crap! There's a guy lurking over there. He's after me! Fury! Crap, that's not going to work! I throw up my armour spell as he lays into me with an axe. Holding down a heal spell I ran back across the bridge to find the dead bandit who is NOT ash. I raise him and run around in circles trying to stay away from the other guy while my new zombie rises to his feet. Once he's up, he defends me bravely, for a dead guy. I can see the still living bandit struggling, but I've got no idea how my own bandit is doing. It's a heart-pounding tension but my loyal zombie pulls through. No sooner has he laid the killing blow then he crumbles to dust. Nicely played, Viriis.
There's a whole group of bandits in the next room. I can hear them but I can't see them! It's so damned dark! As I attract their attention, I run laps around their mining scaffold, flinging fury spells at them. I think there's three or four? Unfortunately they seem more interested in attacking me then each other. In a desperate attempt to divert their attention, I leap off a bridge. It works and they turn to fight each other.
I'm still fumbling about in the dark when one of them dies. Perfect, now I just need to resurrect that corpse.
Where is that corpse? Turns out it's hard to find dead bodies in the dark, especially when somebody's shooting arrows at you. I fury the one on my tail and dash past the archer, hoping they'll turn on each other. Success! Soon there's a fresh corpse to raise (I kept an eye on these two) and finally I'm standing victorious in an empty mine. Win!
As the thrill of battle subsides, I have the presence of mind to check the torches on the walls. It turns out that they're not fixed. That would have been good to know. I loot the entire mine, grabbing everything of value and every torch I can get my hands on.
I emerge outside using the rear entrance to the mine, laden with spoils from what feels like my first real victory. I head back to Riverwood as the sun sets and fortunately Lucan's store is still open for business. I offload everything I can to him and buy myself a few potions. Now that we're on more familiar terms, I ask him about the fight he had with his sister. It turns out somebody stole a valuable item, a Golden Dragon Claw, from his store and his sister wanted to venture out and get it back, but Lucan says no.
Feeling obligated by duty, I couldn't have survived my last venture without his spells, I offer to track down the thieves and return his claw. They're holed up in some mountain temple across the river. Sounds fun?
I pop my head in at the local inn and have a chat to the innkepper. They have cheap beds, only 10 gold for the night, so I settle in and rest up, ready to chase down some thieves in the morning!
