In the morning I set out to see if I can track down a sword for a redguard who mentioned he was missing it yesterday. My directions lead me out into the plains west of Whiterun, where anything could be lurking in the long grass. Oh, hello vicious Sabrecat!
Sabrecats are mean, and pointy. Also very fast. There's no way I can survive this fight, even if I could find that deer that dashed past and pit them against each other. In the distance I can see a large fireplace. Perhaps there's something that way that can help.
Spamming healing spells and armour, I flee towards the pyre. Turn out it belongs to some giants! I'm concerned for my safety, but there's a dead sabrecat nearby so I figure it'll be alright. Sure enough they ignore me (excluding some angry stomping) and instead charge at my feline friend. I don't see what happens, but my world shakes as their clubs hit the ground and the sound of conflict stops. Phew!
Amren (the redguard)'s sword appears to have been nabbed by some bandits holed up in a fort at the base of a mountain range. As I get close to the entrance, they come flooding out, about 5 of them. Perfect! It isn't long before there's, well, some division in the ranks. Meaning they're all killing each other. I fury a nearby mudcrab for kicks... He didn't last long, but it was amusing.
Behind their palisade wall is the entrance to a mine. I suppose I'd better venture in and see what I can find. Unfortunately my resurrected companions don't seem to last the trip from indoors to outdoors, or vice versa. A pile of ash is what's left of my 'help'. There's one guy mining away in the dark, so I try to sneak past. He hears me, but unlocks a nearby door in his attempts to find me. Excellent.
Leaping from the shadows, I get his attention and run past him further into the mine. As the passage opens out, there's 3 more bandits waiting for me. Fury, armour, healing, they're all killing each other! They're all down except for the leader, who looks significantly better armoured. Unfortunately he cuts down my undead assistance as quickly as I can raise it, and now I'm out of corpses. As I run around in a panic, avoiding his two-handed sword, it seems there's only one thing for it.
I dash past and down the ramp, pull open the chest and wrench out Amren's sword. Then I flee, screaming in terror as I run for the mine entrance. Not very heroic, but I got the sword, which is what I came for. Apparently he decides it's simply not worth it, as he doesn't follow me out.
I encounter another group of bandits on my way back to Whiterun, which was fine except for the horse... The stupid thing wouldn't die. And wouldn't leave me alone!
So the life lessons for a 'no-damage' in Skyrim today:
- Giants are handy executioners
- Always have a clear escape route
- Never cast fury on a horse. They do surprisingly mean damage and are apparently invincible**. They also chase you... forever.
** (Better Horses Mod keeps them alive)
