Apparently in a battle of Wolf v Stag, stag wins! The best part being that once the fury effect wore off, the stag ran away! Safe again.
I run into some bandits at an old abandoned tower, but it's fairly run of the mill. Fury, resurrect, loot.
And then I arrive at the Barrow. A few bandits out the front, no big deal. More bandits inside, in a room already littered with corpses, some bandits and giant rats. This is going to be easy. A bit further in some dopey bandit sets off a trap and gets himself killed, which was handy, because after I open the gate-trap I'm set upon by 3 of those rat-like Skeevers. His corpse is exactly what I need for fending those off. At the bottom of the stairs that the Skeevers had come up I meet a new obstacle. Spiderwebs bar the way.
Unable to deal any harmful blows, I'm totally stumped as to how to progress. I try swatting them with my torch, but that's minimally effective. In desperation I put the torch away and push them aside with my hands. Gross!
Not as gross as what follows... Dropping down from the ceiling is an enormous spider! Double the size of those beasts I'd faced with Ralof, this behemoth is injured, but horribly frightening! And there's only one. Not that it matters, as my fury spell is useless on her anyway. Then I hear somebody crying out for help. Behind her, tangled in her web, is a bandit thief! Even if he's unfriendly I'll just get them to kill each other. I'm saved! I dash past her and tear the web aside with my hands again.
The bastard runs off down the tunnel, too fast for me to even hit him with a spell. As he goes he yells something about not sharing the treasure. Treasure? Oh well, at least I can follow him. Seeya later spider!
He runs down a long ramp into some sort of tomb. To our combined horror, the mummified corpses in here start to stand up! At first I think he's going to ditch me again, but then he stops and pulls out his sword. There's three of the monsters so I whip out a fury spell. It does nothing. Akatosh help me, I hope this guy can handle himself. But he's no Ralof. He dies in about 2 seconds. At least I can resurrect him... He rises from the grave, and falls again in moments. Well, that's it. I'm done. As an afterthought, I check what's-his-face's ashes and find the Golden Claw stolen from Lucan! Throwing on some extra magic armour to cover my escape, I high tail it out of there, past that cranky spider and back out into the daylight, feeling pretty miserable. At least I got the claw and can return it to Lucan.
I head back to Riverwood and pop my head in at the trader's. I try to give the claw back to Lucan, but I can't! Something compels me to hold onto it, perhaps it was that thief's mention of treasure. Either way I'm stuck with it for now. Oh well, not much to do here then. I stop in at the inn to get some food and drink and get a few smithing pointers from the local blacksmith, then I head north-east to Whiterun.
A cranky guard greets me at the gate but as soon as I mention the dragon he lets me in. It turns out that a Jarl is some sort of Lord or King, and this one is particularly upset by the news of a Dragon. He sends some soldiers to Riverwood and then points me to his court wizard for a task. Well guess what, Farengar the wizard wants me to find something in Bleakfall Barrow! That's clearly out of the question. Even if he could sell me spells that would help, they're all expensive and I have no money.
I'm starting to think maybe this was all a terrible idea. Perhaps I'll feel better in the morning. I grab some free plates to sell and head to the local inn. The trader is closed already (it is 10pm so that's fair enough) so I'll have to visit another time. For now it's another warm bed for a cheap 10 gold and a good night's sleep. Maybe tomorrow I will learn how to fight the undead...
